Roulette objective

By Simon Ho

The aim of Roulette is to correctly guess where the ball will land after each spin. By placing bets on the appropriate square(s).

European Roulette table layout

In European Roulette rules there are 37 numbers, 0 is green, 18 are red and the remaining 18 are black. The zero gives the house it's edge (of 2.7%) i.e. there is a 1/37 chance of the ball landing on any particular square, but the payout is only 35 to 1 + your original stake if you win.

Types of bets

Inside bets

These are relativity specific bets which carry greater risk (unless multiple inside bets are spread over the board) of course greater risk also carries greater potential returns.

Inside bet Description Payout Example
Straight Up A bet directly on any single number 35 to 1
Split Bet A bet split between any two numbers 17 to 1
Street Bet A bet on a row of 3 numbers 11 to 1
Corner Bet A bet on 4 numbers 8 to 1
Line Bet A bet on 6 numbers over 2 rows 5 to 1

Outside bets

These are spread out bets with better odds at lower returns. Note the zero is never covered by outside bets .

Outside bet Description Payout Example
Column Bet A bet covering 12 numbers, just under a third of the table 2 to 1
Dozen Bet A bet covering a set of 12 numbers low (1-12) mid (13-24) and high (25-36) 2 to 1
Colour Bet A bet on either red or black 1 to 1
Even/Odd Bet A bet on either even or odd 1 to 1
Low/High Bet A bet on half the numbers either 1-18 or 19-36 1 to 1

Inside & outside bets will cover the vast majority of bets you will place but you can read about additional types of Roulette bets to learn Roulette rules on the special bets offered by some casinos.

Roulette variants

French - best variant

The best variation of Roulette we have dubbed as 'French Roulette' will feautre the 'En Prison' rule where half of your 'even money' bets (colour, even/odd and high/low bets) are returned when a zero is spun. Cutting the house advantage in half to 1.35%. Note that there is also the similar the 'la partage' rule , only in this case the player loses half the bet and does not have the option of leaving the bet. Casinos offering French Roulette

American - worst version

In American Roulette rules there are 2 zeros, increasing the house advantage to 5.4%. There is no sense on playing the American version when there are plenty of online casinos offering the European version.
